Hawa El Horreya, Whims of Freedom (2014)

Photographs:

Description:

This performance explores one revolution in the light of another, it pieces together stories of Egypt’s 1919 revolution, and the aftermath of World War I, inevitably drawing parallels to the current state of both Egypt and Syria Linking the historical material to the personal narrative of the two actresses on stage, one Egyptian and the other Syrian, Hawa El Horreya creates a meta-narrative about a history often overlooked. The result is a lecture performance tapping into a world where the stage and politics are intertwined. The struggles against the powers, against a military regime, a male dominant society and official versions of events echo strongly in the struggles we live as a people today. It is an attempt to understand history through the present and to decipher the essence of an era often spoken of but seldom listened to.
