Description:

This project draws on the parallels that exist between the two texts, 'Mother' (1978) by Dario Fo and Franca Rame and 'Press Conference' (2002) by Harold Pinter, adapting and recontextualizing them to fit the modern-day Arab World. While in 'Mother', the heroine is a 'repented' or a 'retired' activist who never stops asking herself where she went wrong in the rearing of her son, Pinter’s minister presents one clear-cut answer: Children are the enemies of the state, especially children of intellectuals and political activists. This adaptation brings together in one theatrical space the marginalized voice of the mother of a 'criminal' side by side with the representation of the all-hegemony voice of the State. State oppression, an unresponsive political system, and a stagnant educational system come to the fore as culprits in the alienation of the individual and the promotion of a culture of violence. While Fo and Rame’s play was written for a different context, their ideas remain vibrant and pertinent today.
